Abrazos Family Support Services Executive Director Completes Selective Leadership Training Course at Northwestern University

April Spaulding was the first New Mexican chosen by The Allstate Foundation for Greater Good Nonprofit Leadership Program aimed at building capacity in the nonprofit sector.

Bernalillo, NM—Abrazos Family Support Services Executive Director April Spaulding recently completed the yearlong, three-session leadership course, which brought together a variety of nonprofit executives to learn from top industry and business experts how to accomplish more in their organizations—and transform the nonprofit sector and their communities in the process. Spaulding was chosen from thousands of interested leaders from across the country to participate in The Allstate Foundation’s Greater Good Nonprofit Leadership Program.

With the wrap up of the program, Spaulding notes the multitude of strategies she was able to bring back to New Mexico and her team.

“New Mexico has numerous struggles, but also great potential for leaders to make wise decisions that can better our community for families.  I believe that leaders do not have all the answers but ask a lot of good questions and should surround themselves by those who will challenge them to take different perspectives and reflect on all angles when addressing an issue or decision. The Greater Good Program provided me with multiple strategies to use to be a good leader and I will forever attribute the turning point in my professional life to the lessons I learned thanks to Allstate.”

Now in its fourth year, The Allstate Foundation’s Greater Good Program – which is offered at no cost to participants and their organizations – provides leadership coaching for nonprofit executives, helping them identify their strengths and weaknesses and improve communications with stakeholders, among other topics. The 9 days of academic learning are broken up into three three-class sessions taught by faculty from the prestigious Northwestern University Kellogg Center for Nonprofit Management. The program also creates a network of people passionate about improving their communities, and gives those in the nonprofit community the tools to take their careers and organizations to the next level.

Greater Good participants also receive a $2,000 stipend from The Allstate Foundation to pursue additional training and development opportunities. Due to the demand for the program, class size has nearly doubled since the first year. Abrazos Family Support Services (AFSS) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization working to empower all children and families to achieve their full potential.
